In late August, I wrote an argument for ForeignPolicy.com with the basic premise that, historically, NATO was never meant to be a country club for the rich and strong, but a harbor for the weak and imperiled. Given the threat posed by Russia, which may be generational, and that NATO could very well have deterred Russia in Ukraine and Georgia if its doors were truly open, we should waste no time in integrating these countries into the alliance as soon as practicable.
