There is one process – the EU accession process – and it has one goal: membership. However, all European democracies that meet the criteria to join, including respect for human rights and the rule of law, as assessed by the European Commission in its annual reports, should gain full access to the European Single Market and to the four freedoms – the free movement of goods, people, services and capital. Citizens and businesses would thus enjoy many of the same rights as those from EU members or Norway and Iceland enjoy today, and borders would become permeable and then invisible as today in Ireland. This should be guaranteed in 2022.
